About Masseto

Masseto, owned by the Frescobaldi family, makes 100% Merlot from a single 7 ha Bolgheri hillside at about 100 m, set on a vein of Pliocene blue clay and farmed organically since 2012. Parcels ferment separately on native yeasts with 21–28 days on skins; malolactic runs in new barriques, parcels stay apart for 12 months, then the blend spends another year in wood and a year in bottle before release. The wine is dense and velvety, with violet, ripe cherry, liquorice, graphite and tobacco. Massetino, made since 2017 from younger Merlot and Cabernet Franc parcels, sees about 12 months in half-new barriques.
