About Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno, now run by Roberto Conterno in Monforte d'Alba, makes traditional Barolo and Barbera from about 17 ha in Serralunga and Monforte. Its core is Cascina Francia, a west-facing calcareous Serralunga monopole of about 16 ha, giving Barolo Cascina Francia (four years in large botti) and a Barbera d'Alba (two years). Monfortino, the Riserva made only in exceptional vintages, macerates up to five weeks without temperature control and spends about seven years in cask. Clay-rich Cerretta yields a lusher, fruit-driven Barolo, made since 2010, plus Barbera; limestone Arione joined in 2015. Fermentation uses submerged-cap maceration in large wooden vats, and the wines show vigorous tannins.
