About Sonoma County

Sonoma County is a county appellation and one of California's largest grape-growing areas, producing far more than the Napa Valley AVA. In the early 1800s Russian settlers at Fort Ross planted the first vines, which were bearing by 1823, while Spanish settlers moved north. General Vallejo later founded the town of Sonoma. Wineries founded between the Civil War and Prohibition that still operate include Bundschu, Foppiano, Korbel, Simi and Sebastiani. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot noir are the most planted grapes, and Merlot and Zinfandel are also well known. The county contains nineteen sub-AVAs.
