About Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
Pichon Comtesse, a Pauillac second growth owned by the Rouzaud family (Louis Roederer), has about 90 ha of vines on gravelly hilltops over sandy-clay subsoils. Once known for an unusually high share of Merlot, it is now planted to about 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and recent grand vins are 70–75% Cabernet. The grand vin is renowned for balance and depth, and part of the vineyard is converting to organic and biodynamic farming. Pichon Comtesse Réserve, the second wine, is vinified plot by plot, filled by gravity into truncated-cone vats; the 2021 spent 12 months in barrel (40% new), showing raspberry, cherry, lilac and liquorice.
