About Chateau Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild, the Rothschild family's Pauillac first growth, farms 112 ha of deep fine gravel and wind-blown sand over limestone: slopes around the château, the Carruades plateau, and a 4.5 ha parcel in Saint-Estèphe. Plantings are mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grand vin, from vines over ten years old, is typically 80–95% Cabernet, fermented about 15 days, barrel-selected and aged some 15 months in new oak; the estate describes it as upright, delicate and subtle. Roughly a third of production becomes Carruades de Lafite, higher in Merlot and aged about 16 months in barrels from the group's own Pauillac cooperage.
