About Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a red-wine AOC created by a 1954 decree that covers the same ground as plain Saint-Émilion: Saint-Émilion itself, seven nearby villages and part of Libourne, on the Dordogne's right bank, but with stricter rules: smaller permitted crops, riper musts, at least 11.5% natural alcohol, and ageing until 1 February of the second year after harvest. Blends rely on Merlot, backed by Cabernet Franc and some Cabernet Sauvignon, from limestone plateau, clay-limestone slopes, gravel terraces and sandy plain. Only this AOC may carry Grand Cru Classé and Premier Grand Cru Classé titles, held by estates such as Figeac and Pavie.
