About Canon-Fronsac

Canon-Fronsac is a small red-only appellation on Bordeaux's right bank, set where the Isle joins the Dordogne and limited to parts of Fronsac and Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac, entirely inside the larger Fronsac zone. Around 40 growers work its vineyards, which covered about 198 ha in 2023. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec are the principal grapes, planted on clay-limestone soils over Asteries limestone on the plateau and on molasse slopes. Recognised in 1939 as Côtes Canon Fronsac, it took its present name in 1964. The wines run from deep ruby to garnet, with red fruit moving toward spice and game and a fleshy finish. Producers include Château Canon Pécresse and Château Tour Canon.
