About Valdicava
Valdicava, run by Vincenzo Abbruzzese in the Montosoli zone north of Montalcino, grows only Sangiovese, organically, on about 27 ha of vines within a 135 ha estate at around 350 m on galestro, limestone and clay. Yields are low and macerations long, and both fermentation and ageing take place in large Slavonian oak botti. The Brunello spends 36 months in wood and tastes of ripe cherry, cedar and sandalwood, with a building tannic structure and mineral tension. The Madonna del Piano Riserva, a single vineyard, gets 48 months in oak and is darker, with plum, truffle and leather, made for long ageing. A Rosso di Montalcino completes the range.
