About Marcassin

Marcassin, Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer's label, now bottles only Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from its own dry-farmed estate near Fort Ross on the Sonoma Coast: about 20 acres of fractured volcanic soil roughly two-thirds Pinot Noir. Chardonnay clones include Wente, Mt. Eden and Hyde; Pinot draws on Swan, Calera and Pommard, and Bessie's Block Pinot Noir is a small separate bottling. Chardonnay is pressed as whole clusters, Pinot destemmed and cold-soaked; both ferment on native yeasts, age about a year in new François Frères barrels and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Rich, opulent and ripe, they are released around five years after the vintage.
