About Chateau Pape Clement
Château Pape Clément, owned by Bernard Magrez, makes a red and a white grand vin plus a Clémentin second wine in each colour. The red grows on Pyrenean clay-gravel, Merlot on the clay to the east and Cabernet Sauvignon on gravel to the west, with a little Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc; in 2023 it was half Merlot. Berries are destemmed by hand, fermented in 30–70 hl wooden vats and aged about 18 months in French oak; cassis and mocha notes need 10–15 years to open. The white, from about 9 ha, is mostly Sauvignon Blanc with Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle, picked in several successive passes and pressed sequentially.
