About Chateau Leoville Poyferre

Léoville Poyferré, the Cuvelier family's Saint-Julien Second Growth, farms about 60 ha of scattered gravel terraces over sandy clay, planted (per the estate) to 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Decanter calls it the most voluptuous of the three Léovilles, usually with more Merlot and the only one to use Petit Verdot. Plots ferment separately in steel, malolactic happens in new barrels, and the wine spends 18–20 months in about 80% new oak. The second wine, Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré, ages 18 months in used barrels. Moulin Riche, a separate 20 ha block, is bottled under its own name.
