About Ducru-Beaucaillou
Ducru-Beaucaillou, the Borie family's Saint-Julien second growth, makes three reds from gravel rises of quartz pebbles close to the Gironde estuary. The grand vin comes from roughly 50 ha planted about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot; grapes are strictly selected and vinified plot by plot and the wine spends 18 months in barrel, 50–80% new depending on the vintage. The estate describes a gently fruity attack, a full, voluptuous body and silky tannins, and one writer, Jay McInerney, called it a kind of Burgundian Bordeaux. La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou, around 60% Cabernet with Merlot and a little Petit Verdot, is powerful, silky and aromatic. Le Petit Ducru, added in 2019, is an easygoing Cabernet-Merlot meant for drinking young.
