About Northern Rhône
The northern Rhône has a continental climate, with hard winters, warm summers and the cold mistral wind, so it is cooler than the south. Syrah is the only red grape allowed. Cornas must be pure Syrah. Elsewhere white grapes may be blended in, but this is common only in Côte-Rôtie. Whites come from Viognier in Condrieu and Château-Grillet, and from Marsanne and Roussanne in Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Saint-Péray. The reds are known for aromas of green olive and smoky bacon. Though prestigious, these appellations make less than 5% of all Rhône wine.
