About Hermitage

Hermitage is a small northern Rhône appellation on a steep granite hill above Tain-l'Hermitage. Its vines face south-west, towards the afternoon sun. It makes mainly red Syrah, which may include up to 15% Marsanne or Roussanne, and rich dry whites from those two grapes. Legend says the name comes from a wounded knight who lived as a hermit on the hill after 1224. The chapel at the top now belongs to Paul Jaboulet Aîné. Louis XIII made Hermitage a court wine, and in the 19th century Bordeaux was sometimes blended with it to raise its price. The leading producer is Jean-Louis Chave, with Chapoutier, Jaboulet and Delas also prominent.
