About Beaune
Beaune is the largest village-named appellation on the Côte d'Or, with about 412 hectares in 2008, just ahead of Gevrey-Chambertin. It was created in 1936. The wine is mostly red Pinot Noir, with about 15 per cent white Chardonnay. Beaune has no grand crus, but its well-regarded premiers crus include vineyards owned by the big Beaune négociant houses, which make some of their flagship wines there. The town gives its name to the whole Côte de Beaune. It should not be confused with the separate Chorey-lès-Beaune and Savigny-lès-Beaune appellations or with Côte de Beaune-Villages.
