About Vieux Chateau Certan
Vieux Château Certan, the Thienpont family's Pomerol estate, farms 14 ha in a single block of 23 independently managed parcels next to Pétrus. Most vines grow on the Günz gravel terrace, with large pebbles and clay over iron-rich subsoil; about 30% sit on deeper clay. Plantings are roughly two-thirds Merlot with about 25–30% Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon on the gravelliest spots. Yields are cut by green harvesting and each vintage is a selection of the finest batches, giving deeply coloured, naturally concentrated wines with rich, subtle aromas that need a few years in bottle. Gravette de Certan is the second wine.
