About Rhys

Rhys, Kevin Harvey's Santa Cruz Mountains estate, makes single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah from biodynamically farmed sites planted to heritage "suitcase" selections like Swan and Calera. Each vineyard has a distinct voice: Alpine, steep chalky Purisima soils at 1,200–1,490 ft, gives mineral Pinot and Chardonnay; Horseshoe's shale and limestone bring tension; Skyline, near 2,360 ft, is exotic and stony; tiny Home, on sandstone, is earthy; Family Farm is more powerful and floral; Bearwallow in Anderson Valley shows wild berries and saline notes. Pinot is picked early, often fully whole-cluster, foot-trodden and aged about 14 months in Burgundy barrels with restrained new oak, unfined and unfiltered.
