About Ornellaia

Ornellaia, the Frescobaldi-owned Bolgheri estate, grows mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot on marine, alluvial and volcanic soils, split into dozens of parcels. The Bolgheri Superiore grand vin (53% Cabernet Sauvignon in 2021) ferments in steel and concrete, goes through malolactic in barriques 70% new and spends about 18 months in barrel plus a year in bottle; it is plush yet powerful, with black fruit, cocoa and Mediterranean shrub notes and silky tannins. Le Serre Nuove, the second wine since 1997, is fresher, with red berries. Le Volte blends Sangiovese with Bordeaux varieties. Whites include Ornellaia Bianco, Poggio alle Gazze and Ornus.
