About Opus One

Opus One, the Mondavi–Rothschild venture in western Oakville, makes one grand vin from four estate parcels: two inside To Kalon, plus the Ballestra and River blocks around the winery. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon-led with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec (93% Cabernet in 2021). Fruit is meticulously sorted, macerated around 19 days, aged about 18 months in new French oak, then held 15 months in bottle before an October 1 release. Critics found violet, cassis, blue fruit and graphite in the 2021, over silky tannins. Overture, the second wine since 1993, also sees new oak but is redder, softer and creamier.
