About Occidental (Kistler)
Occidental is Steve Kistler's Pinot Noir-only estate, started in 2011 and now run by his daughter Catherine as winemaker and CEO, farming 85 acres on ridges and marine terraces around Bodega in the Freestone-Occidental area, at 400–750 feet. The vines descend from Vosne-Romanée cuttings that Kistler selected for smaller, looser clusters. The five single-vineyard wines are Bodega Headlands (Cuvée Elizabeth), Running Fence (Cuvée Catherine), SWK, Bodega Ridge and Occidental Station. Fermentation uses native yeasts, with 20–30% whole clusters in blocks showing millerandage, then French oak, about a quarter new; wines stay unracked and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Expect intense red fruit, saline and mineral notes, and low alcohol.
