About Chateau Trotanoy

Château Trotanoy, a Moueix property since 1953, farms 7.2 ha on the Pomerol plateau, planted entirely to Merlot according to the estate (Wikipedia still cites 10% Cabernet Franc). The west-facing slope runs from gravel at the top to dense clay lower down, over red gravel and an iron-pan 'crasse de fer'; the clay dries almost concrete-hard. The grand vin ferments in small concrete vats and ages about 18 months in oak, around half new, giving a deep-coloured, powerful wine with creamy dark-chocolate notes that can keep 25 years or more in great vintages. Since 2009, gravelly north-eastern parcels make Espérance de Trotanoy, a fruit-forward second wine released only in some years.
