About Joh. Jos. Prum

Joh. Jos. Prüm in Wehlen grows Riesling on steep Devonian slate, much of it on ungrafted vines. Wehlener Sonnenuhr, on stony Devonian slate, and Graacher Himmelreich, on deep weathered slate with blue slate, are the key sites, with Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube and Lay. The range runs from Kabinett through Spätlese and Auslese, including Goldkapsel, to rare Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese; the family treats each Prädikat as a different style rather than a quality step. Late harvests, low yields and mostly wild-yeast, reductive fermentation give light-bodied yet intense, racy wines that can seem sulphurous and closed in youth, change markedly after three to five years and can live for decades.
