About Chateau Rayas
Château Rayas, the Reynaud family estate, grows Grenache on 12–13 ha of north-facing, iron-rich sand in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, rather than the region's typical galets roulés, at yields of about 10–20 hl/ha. The red is pure Grenache, fermented whole-bunch with native yeasts and aged just under two years in old oak; it is pale, perfumed and silky, and Emmanuel Reynaud recommended waiting 20–25 years. Pignan, also pure Grenache, comes from a pine-ringed 2 ha block on less sandy soil and is more approachable. Rayas Blanc blends Grenache Blanc and Clairette equally, rich yet poised. The family also makes Côtes du Rhône Château de Fonsalette.
