About Chateau d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem, the only Sauternes rated Premier Cru Supérieur in 1855, makes one sweet wine plus the dry Y. Roughly 100 ha are in production on gravel over clay, sand and limestone, where autumn mists favour noble rot; Sémillon dominates, with Sauvignon Blanc (70/30 in 2023). Botrytised berries are hand-picked in successive passes, usually five or six and sometimes up to ten, for yields near 9 hl/ha, and the wine spends about three years in barrel. Concentrated and sweet, balanced by relatively high acidity, it can keep for a century or more. Y, made since 1959 and every year since 2004, blends Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.
