About Abreu

Abreu, viticulturist David Abreu's St. Helena winery, makes Cabernet blends with a high share of Cabernet Franc and some Petit Verdot. Grapes are picked by ripeness rather than variety and co-fermented in the same tanks, so blends shift every year. Madrona Ranch, the first property, reaching the base of Spring Mountain on red, tufa and clay soils, carries around 40% Cabernet Franc. Thorevilos, about 40 acres on the eastern slopes above St. Helena, has a wild, mid-mountain character. Cappella, an old site near St. Helena, is Cabernet Sauvignon-led, and Las Posadas sits above 2,000 feet on Howell Mountain, giving fine-grained tannins. Vinovest cites two years in new French oak.
